Trilogy Tour @ The Annandale 14/08/09

September 2nd 2009 09:08
Ahhh, a rock show at the Annandale. Is there any better way to relax and unwind after the working week? The Trilogy tour involves Triple J favoritesDukes Of Windsor , the awesome and underrated Trial Kennedy and NZ rockers Midnight Youth.

YMidnight Youth sounded quite good and must have a big following because the room was near at capacity for their set. I didn’t actually watch their set but from out the back where I met up with friends and enjoying a beverage and a cigarette, I was impressed by their sound. Definitely a band I need to pay more attention to in the future.

I went along tonight for one real reason, and that was to see Trial Kennedy for the third time this year. I’ve gushed about this band enough already but I need to reiterate just how good these guys are. Continuing to play songs of their debut “New Manic Art” the boys set the place on fire getting the packed crowd involved with good, catchy, well crafted rock songs. There’s no hype, no pretentiousness and they certainly don’t reinvent the stone with their music. But they deliver it with such passion and enthusiasm it’s hard to not get involved. Tonight we got a taste of a new track which will be on the forth coming record which will probably drop some time in the new year, and it was a cracker! When I first saw them play at the very same venue I thought I had witness the rise of huge band, and I still believe that now.

have never really captured my imagination too much. Yeah I’ve heard the songs on Triple J and know they’ve been massive on the festival circuit over the last couple of years. But like Birds Of Tokyo a few months before hand, they had to follow a red hot Trial Kennedy and couldn’t quite match the level set down. They tried, and I liked what I saw and heard, but the weight of expectation to deliver outweighed the overall performance. Given that the room was packed for the 1st band and still steaming from the 2nd, the headliners saw less faces and more people calling it quits and leaving before they were done. Which I felt bad for them. They were genuinely excited to play tonight. I was fortunate to speak to one of the boys backstage while watching Trial Kennedy and he said he loved playing at the Annandale and always expected a big show. (I didn’t realise who he was until I saw him on stage and then it all made sense. I thought he was a bit weird talking about the crowd and the sound of the room???!!) But tonight I felt that it fell a little short. Which isn’t meant to degrade the Dukes. It just proves how good Trial Kennedy are.
