Trial Kennedy @ Oxford Art Factory 28.10.2011

November 8th 2011 09:14
Out in the street on a Friday night on Oxford Street, Halloween revelers were taking over the night. Inside the confines of the Art Factory, a cracking rock show was taking place. Royal Chant opened up proceedings with their loud and rawkus brand of garage rock. The sound reverberated around the walls as the band tore through a half hour set to end it with some rock n’ roll decadence trashing half the drum kit and throwing the bass across the stage. Classic!

The Dead Love were next and the three piece weren’t to be out done. Combining elements of punk rock attitude, metal inspired riffs and classic rock hooks, the group had a great sound and a great energy. The room of punters swelled as Dead Love celebrated their new video being on youtube with a sharp set that also ending with the guitarist/vocalist throwing his guitar up and the air as he walked off stage, leaving it to hit the stage floor and scream with feedback. I like the way this was heading. A good precedent set!

I feel like I’ve missed something with Strangers. The crowd were pumped for the Sydney boys and justifiably so, with some crunching rock songs to get the head banging and the fist in the air pumping. I did admire the guitarists handle bar mustache. He looked very much like a young Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. The band had some well crafted songs sticking to an age old formula because it works...and works well!

The band took the brave and some what bold move to cover PJ Harvey’s “Long Snake Moan”. A polished live act, I can see this band building a bigger reputation.

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen Trial Kennedy. Pretty much every time they are in town, I’ll head along. I just know that they will never let me down live. Even when the sound was a little flat at the beginning of the set, it built into one of the more fun and engaging Trial Kennedy gigs I’ve seen.

Ploughing through tracks of their most recent release “Living Undesigned” which for me was highlighted by the track “Arrest Room” half way through the set. The beautiful slower track is designed to promote the fabulous abilities of frontman Tim Morrison’s voice. He is quite possibly the most underrated vocalist in the country. He has also grown as a frontman of a rock band. Guitarist Stacey used to do all the talking in between songs, keeping the audience engaged. Tonight Tim was in fine form joking around and being quite talkative. When the band screwed up “War King” he found it best to blame someone in the front row for missing the cue as well and follow Tim in singing the wrong verse.

This was to be the last Trial Kennedy show for the year in Sydney as the band look to write some new tunes. Stacey informed the crowd the next album may end up sounding like “Refused or Meshuggah” but I doubt it will be that hardcore or metal. Guaranteed the next album will be melodic rock songs with great hooks, sing along anthems and continue to be impressive.
