Top Five Of 2009:
December 15th 2009 06:15
It’s that time of year when the fat guy in the red suit loads up his mythical carriage filled with toys made by midgets and proceeds to break into homes all over the world to deposit these gifts.
It’s also that time when every reviewer recaps on all the music they’ve listened to over the year and in another act of self indulgent opinion, ranks their favorites. So here’s mine!!!
This year saw a lot of my favorite punk bands release new albums, Australian bands really stand up and deliver great albums and a few surprises along the way. To kick it off,
Five Favorite Songs of 2009:
5. Hilltop Hoods-’the light that you burned’
Reminded me so much of ‘Nosebleed Section’ from a few years
back. Great samples, simple and catchy.
4. Lisa Mitchell-’coin laundry’
Ex-Australian Idol contestant with a nice little quirky song which
I can be a sucker for at times.
3. The Temper Trap-’fader’
First song I heard from these guys and loved straight away. Again
simple and catchy.
2. Weezer-’if you’re wondering if i want you to (i want you to)’
Probably Weezer’s best song in years. Shame the rest of the album
was not in the same vein as this catchy track
1, Bluejuice-’broken leg’
By far the most catchiest, singalong, fun songs of the year. I can not
tire from hearing this song. The 80’s synth riff is awesome!!

Now we move onto,
Five Favorite Albums of 2009
AFI-crash love
AFI return with a great rock record. A natural progression in sound
for a band that has continually changed their identity to avoid being
4. Regina Spektor-Far
All bias and prejudice aside, she still has the sexiest voice ever. I doubt
she could release a bad album in my eyes.
3. The Temper Trap-conditions
The biggest surprise for me this year. The album grows on you the more
you listen to it and it gets better each listen.
2. Billy Talent-III
Big expectations on this one. With alot of my fave bands releasing albums
that probably ended up falling a little short to my expectations, this one
delivered.
1. Alexisonfire-old crows/young cardinals
Just a cracking album from track one to the track eleven. Not a weak song
on the album and the first time the band utilized their unique vocalists to
compliment each other. Brilliant.

So to the final category;
Five Favorite Gig of 2009
5.Bluejuice @ Metro October 2009
Just a great live show. Full of energy and hype. Great catchy songs
and being halloween, half the crowd were dressed up and in party
mode and Bluejuice are a great party band.
4.Skipping Girl Vinegar @ Raval November 2009
2nd time seeing this amazing band and they played beautifully over
2 sets as apart of their residency. Plus they made us cookies!!
3.Tom Gabel & Chuck Ragan @ the Annandale May 2009
Two men with powerful voices and songs, on stage, by themselves
and the rocked it so hard I left feeling exhausted as if I had been
in the middle of a mosh pit at full on rock show
2.Soundwaves @ Eastern Creek February 2009
I was in punk rock heaven. Soundwaves is the best concept in a
festival since Warped. Billy Talent was the standout. With Riverboat
Gamblers the surprise packet.
1.Trial Kennedy @ the Annandale January 2009
Even when this gig ended I knew it would be the best I’d see all year.
It was probably the first time I walked out of a gig totally blown away.
So much so I saw them again another 2 times throughout and each
time they just owned the stage.
So thats it kids. 2009 done and dusted. By far the best year in music for quite some time. The talent in this country is phenomenal and this year saw alot of really good albums come out.
Thanks to everyone who have read a review, signed on as link reader and left a comment. Much appreciated. Continue to support live music and music in general and not the shit you see on video shows and played on commercial FM radio. Crap music should not be tolerated!!!!! Merry Xmas fuckers!
