Tony Sly - 12 Song Program
May 29th 2010 08:35
When No Use For A Name frontman released a split album with friend and Lagwagon vocalist Joey Cape in 2004 it showed a mature side to Sly. The acoustic album really highlighted how great a songwriter he has become over the years and how versatile his songs from NUFAN could be.
Influenced by classic songwriters ranging from Lennon & McCartney through to Elliott Smith, Sly has created an album of heart and soul played with beautiful simplicity. A track like ‘Keira’ dedicated to his youngest daughter, is a heartfelt solemn number. ‘Toaster In The Bathtub’ is a pub-style singalong typical of a track The Pogues or even the Dropkick Murphys would write.
Tony Sly’s voice is often understated in punk rock circles. This release allows this talent to rise up from the normal punk rock chords that it’s usually hidden behind. Lyrically Tony writes about relationships, love and life as only a man who has travelled the world and experienced alot can write about.
While Tony Sly has made this record himself, he invited a few friends in to help out on a few tracks. Joey Cape lends vocals on ‘Amends’, Dance Hall Crashers’ Karina Denike adds some back up vocals to a few tracks and Swingin’ Utters bassist Darius Koski provides violins and accordion and Fat Mike plays bass on the track ‘Already Won’.
This is just not another punk rock front man getting older and exploring his softer side like so many do at the moment. This is a genuine case of a talent songwriter expanding his fans expectations and attempted to reach a wider audience. “12 Song Program” is a solid little debut album from Tony Sly and will undoubtedly be the first of many more to come.
