Timber Timbre - “Creep On Creepin’ On”

We’ve heard the expression “a beautiful nightmare”? This may just be the soundtrack to that beautiful nightmare. Timber Timbre’s fourth release in five years is in equal parts creepy and scary as it is beautiful and sweet. “Creep On Creepin’ On” plays out like a live theatrical movie score where the characters on stage are beloved childhood monsters singing of lost loves and woe.
The three piece manage to create haunting compositions that hold onto a rawness and then polish it off with vocalist/guitarist Taylor Kirk’s deep, silky, alluring tones. Some parts minimalist, some parts doo-wop, some parts blues. They create an eerie atmosphere that evokes a physical response. Sitting on the bus listening to this album on my way to work I felt a shiver go down my spine, and it wasn’t the frosty early morning, it was the minor cadences of Timber Timbre.
The title track is a jazz layered, spooky pop track which typifies the tone of the album. The stucco piano/harpsichord riffs with tortured trumpet and singer Taylor telling us he will “just keep on/creepin’ on. “Obelisk” and “Swamp Magic” are truly spooky instrumentals with it’s minimalist, avant-garde feel that reverbs around an empty room. “Lonesome Hunter” has elements of Elvis croon mixed with Nick Cave swagger and insane orchestral ending which seems out of place, yet fits perfectly with the groups style.
Timber Timbre is music for the graveyard on a full moon at midnight. It’s cold, it’s eerie, it’s disturbing. It’s beautiful..... A beautiful nightmare!
