The Swellers - “Good For Me”
August 7th 2011 02:47
The Swellers are melodic punk rock in vein of No Use For A Name and The Ataris. Capturing the essence of the sound made popular by Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph in the 90s. “Good For Me” is full of vocal harmonies, melodic riffs, punchy chord progressions and double kick drum blasts which made the signature sound of the genre. Something the band sings about with fond reflection on 'Best I Ever Had' about those great years of punk rock 94-96 and 99 and how the records released in that time had an impact on them and everyone involved in the scene at that time.
In punk rock there is some fundamentals that can be found in just about every record. 'The Damage' is a track that's a plea to someone with an addiction to stop and turn their life around. There's the typical tracks about relationships which has always signified punk rock and spawn the emo movement ( but we can't hold that against them) Tracks like 'Parkview' and 'Inside My Head' are best examples of this.
Throughout this whole record I got flashbacks to my teenage punk days. The band certainly wear their influences on their sleeve. The Swellers have hit their groove on this, their fifth record. Comfortable in their own skin, they don’t try for dramatic changes in sound or direction. A solid punk rock album.
