The Optimen - ‘the out of money experience’
August 7th 2010 02:08
Brisbane hip hop group return after a five year gap to unleash their sophomore record “The Out Of Money Experience”. A record full of great beats, rhymes, samples and tracks. There’s a funky vibe that flows throughout the album, even during more sombre, serious tracks. The samples fit the lyrical themes and the rhymes are sharp and delivered with precision.
‘On The Rocks’ is a great track about being in love with the wrong girl. ’80’s Babies’ pays homage to the 80’s while ’30 Rock’ explores getting older and hitting that milestone of 30. The album feature some guest work from the likes of Rainman, Lazy Grey, Phil The Agony and label mates The Archetypes in the track that tips a hat to the pioneers of the scene in ‘Respecognise’. One theme that always creeps in and out of songs is money. More importantly, the lack of money as you struggle to make it week to week. Not that the band are crying as starving artists, but who wouldn’t like a bit more coin to ease the burden a little?
it’s unfair to compare The Optimen to the likes of Hilltop Hoods, but there is similarities between the two and by no means is that meant to take anything away from The Opees. The songs are infectious, catchy and are just cool. The group have worked hard at creating an album from start to finish. There’s enough groove to dance to, enough variety to not get bored with it. The Optimen should be named up there with the likes of Hilltop Hoods, Muph and Plutonic and Bliss n Eso when talking about great Aussie hip hop acts. Second album syndrome hasn’t affected the boys by the standards of this album. Anyone partial to a bit of hip hop needs to hear this record.
