The Offspring-rise and fall, rage and grace
January 24th 2009 23:08
It's been 14 years since their breakthrough album 'smash' and Dexter, Noodles and the boys are still doing what they do best. Churn out the so-cal punk rock sound. The Offspring are never going to re invent the wheel. They're unlikely to move into a new direction in sound or experiment with instruments and break from a winning formula. They just keep the fuel octaned pace of simple chord progressions and riffs fans have come to love. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Dexter's voice is in fine form in the opener 'Half Truism' as the track reminds you that this is the "Offspring sound" and thats why you love it. 'Kristy Are You Doing OK?' and 'Fix You' bring the tempo down allowing the listener a brief pause before the aural assault continues. What I like about Offspring is they are a happy band. Feel down? whack on a Offspring disc. Won't matter which one cause they all work.
While I was sceptical that this would not be any good, the songs reminded me that the Offspring are Mr Constancy in music today and this record is no different.
