The Living End @ The Enmore 3/9/11

September 26th 2011 05:05
Typically, I’d like to run down the entire bill, giving you a brief snippet to my own opinion about the proceeding bands. Bands you may not of normally heard of. All in an attempt to add a bit of publicity and maybe, just maybe on an occasion you’ll see the name crop up on another bill and go, “i remember reading a review about these guys. They might be alright.”

Well I’m not going to that this time. Not because I had spent the whole day drinking and missed the first two acts, it’s because tonight I got served a lesson. A lesson on why The Living End deserve all the accolades they’ve received in their fifteen plus year history. Not that I’m not a fan. Far from it, but it was my first time seeing them live since they were a bunch of young kids who were about to break out playing at 11:30am on a small stage at a Big Day Out back 95 (or 96).

Firstly, they walked out with little fan fare but a thunderous cheer from the Enmore crowd. A small nod towards the crowd in appreciation and then they unleashed the beast and generally blew the roof off the building for the next two hours. The trio never skipped a beat. Everything was perfect. From the lightning, to the sound, to the song choice and timing of the tracks, to the encore and finally wave goodbye, it was flawless. I got so caught up in singing along to every word, (I was amazed that I knew every word!) that it felt like only 20 minutes had passed when they said good night. I wanted more. As exhausted as I felt, I could’ve sat through that again and still have loved every minute of it.

People who have seen The Living End play will know that the band do have a great reputation for putting on a solid rock show. There’s some bands you know will give it 100% each night. Even if they don’t do anything flashy as a stage show, the songs and music alone carry them through. (Foo Fighters immediately come to mind here) Tracks off the new album “The End Is Just The Beginning Repeating” seemed sound better live. Older favourites such as ‘West End Riot’, ‘Prisoner Of Society’, ‘Roll On’ and ‘White Noise’ sound just as fresh as new tracks like ‘In the Morning’, ‘Song For The Lonely’ and ‘Ride The Wave Boy’. It was timeless, no bullshit, working class rock n’ roll.

Its fair to say I’ve seen a lot of live music in the last few years. And there has been some cracking shows that will stay with me forever. This is one that will also. The band were on the fire, the room were one with the band and it was simply awesome. The first gig I’ve left in a long time with my ears ringing. They were by far the loudest band I’ve seen play at the Enmore and I’ve seen punk bands and metal bands and this quite simply shat all over them combined.

People will debate who some of the greatest rock bands have been in Australia in the last 20 years. There is a lot when you think of it. From Silverchair to Powderfinger, Midnight Oil to AC/DC, Birds Of Tokyo to JBT. But for me after this performance, if you don’t throw The Living End in there, well, you’re un-Australian and quite possibly ignorant to the live music scene in this country.

So...the verdict after all that wankery is THEY FUCKIN” ROCKED.
