The Jim Jones Revue - “Burning Your House Down”
January 11th 2011 10:01
Let me set a scene for you. 1950’s. A typical American diner. Red leather booths, black and white checked linoleum floors. Women dressed in polka dot dresses, guys wearing baseball bomber jackets. Milkshakes in tall glasses and ice cream sundaes. in the corner is a jukebox filled with records. Some cat puts in a dime and out the speaker is the raucous sound of honky tonk piano, guitars and a man spitting words at you. It makes you want to move. Your hips start to swivel and your toes start tapping. A Couple, spontaneously get up and start dancing. So does the rest of the diner. Thats what this album reminds me of.
The Jim Jones Revue is that 50’s inspired blues fueled rock n’ roll full of swagger and balls. Sounding like great rock n rollers Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. Behind that is traces of garage punk acts like The Stooges and MC5. The bands second album “Burning Your House Down” 30 odd minutes of high octane rock that hits you relentlessly until the final chord. Jim Jones, is a brilliant front man and delivers the lyrics like Iggy Pop with a snarl and bite that commands the listener to pay attention to his songs.
There isn’t a poor track on the album. All of them are worthy of repeated listens. From opener ‘Dishonest John’, the theme and pace is set and continues all through the record. Stand outs are the Little Richard sounding ‘Elemental’, ‘Shoot First’ and single ‘High Horse’.
You get the feeling that this record will spawn the next fad in music. After a 70’s garage rock revival, emo and indie pop/acoustic music, I get the feeling The Jim Jones Revue will lead the resurgence of classic rock n roll. Out here with this years Big Day Out and sideshows, it is worth taking the time to check these guys out.
