The Get Up KIds- something to write home about
January 25th 2010 01:59
The Get Up Kids we're emo before it turned cool and goth. Back when it was played by punks with songs about relationships hearts won and lost and life in general. Before the screaming before the hair straighten fringes and before the eyeliner the get up kids established a sound that saw the band be favourites on the warped tour and will soon reform for Soundwaves this February.
Their debut album “Something To Write Home About” showcases the bands sound and the depth of their talent. Progressive punk rock guitar riffs, mixed by great compositions and intelligent songwriting make this album stand out, seeing as this album is now over 10 years old.
Quality tracks like ‘Red Letter Day’, ‘I’m A Loner, Dottie’ and ‘My Apology’ really examplified the intelligent songwriting process created by the band. And this being a debut album also makes it equally impressive and I feel, really set a benchmark for punk bands with their first release. For a long time you could get away with a poor sounding, almost rushed recording process with songs not yet crafted fully and it would be okay, because it’s punk rock. Now days, the fickle fans won’t allow for sub par albums. No matter who they are.
The Get Up Kids play what I call real emo punk rock. Full of emotion, heart-on-your-sleeve songs that can strike a nerve with any person over the age of 15. And the fact that they are back together again and touring and writing can only mean more quality music to come.
