The Dead Weather - “Sea Of Cowards”

Not wasting any time in following up last years debut record “Horehound”, The Dead Weather have dropped album two and it sees Jack White revert back to the sounds he got from early White Stripes material. Free flowing and cool, chaotic yet organized. “Sea Of Cowards” mark a return to form for White and establishes this band as more than just a supergroup but a band of musicians who can really achieve something great if this release is anything to go by.
Blues inspired southern rock riffs, extended garage jams, catchy hooks and repetition lyrics fill the 11 tracks on the album. Vocal duties are shared more evenly between Alison and Jack with their voices sounding so similar it’s hard to decipher who is who at times. After the heavy ‘Blue Blood Blues’ and ‘Hussle And Cuss’, the band add keyboards/pianos/synthesisers to the mix turning them into swamp filled dirty instruments to complement the sound created with this album. ‘The Difference Between Us’, ‘Die By The Drop’ and ‘Old Mary’ are great examples of the this.
The time spent touring together has helped form a great songwriting chemistry between the group. They sound more in sync with where they are headed and for me, this is better well rounded effort compared to their debut album.
