Tegan and Sara @ The Enmore - jan 2009

I had spent the day leading up to the show tonight wondering what the scene of the crowd would be like. The Canadian alternate pop duo have captured a strong fan base in Australia through solid albums and generous airplay through Triple J. When we arrived I was confronted by a mix of punks, alternates, lesbians, parents with little kids, emo’s, the art crowd and boyfriends being dragged by their girls.
Again. I didn’t see the opening act. (We are really bad at missing the supports. Something we’ll try to work on) Being shown to our seats by an usher, I thought about how I like the idea of seated gigs. Maybe I’m getting old. BUt sitting in the balcony for tonight’s show was more enjoyable than standing on the floor trying to see the girls through and over peoples heads.
Tegan and Sara walked on stage, Tegan dressed in white, Sara in black and kicked off a set comprising of the classics from their most popular albums “The Con” and “So Jealous”. Tonight we treated to a couple of new tracks. One, which had a punk feel to it, the other, your typical Tegan and Sara sound. Plus we treated to an old song that I reckon most of the audience had never heard or knew existed. (The duo had three albums before the break though record “So Jealous”) They swapped vocal duties for each song and swapped guitars for every song. I have never seen a group change guitars as often as Tegan and Sara. The guitar tech had his work cut out and earned his allowance tonight. Surely, they could’ve adjusted the set list so that for a few songs, they could use the same guitars? Anyway, tonight’s show was tight and fun. It’s more enjoyable for the when you can see the performers enjoying what they are doing up on stage. The girls chatted to the crowd, joked and laughed at each other. Someone threw a large bra on stage which Tegan return because “I know how expensive these things are!” and related stories of their childhood and first boyfriends. (Who dumped them at the same time over the phone) A great show and I can’t wait for the new album and seeing them again in the not to distant future. (They’ve been out 4 times in 2008 apparently)
