Sugar Army @ The Annandale Hotel 05/10/09

The Vignettes reminded me so much of The White Stripes. A two piece with the female drummer and the guy out front on guitar and singing. And they kind of looked alot like a young White Stripes. They played well for the small crowd with some garage rock. They barely looked 18 so expect to hear more of this duo in coming years.
Here Come The Birds failed to impress me the first time I saw them but if I remember rightly I said it would be interesting to see them down the track to see how they would go. Well, it's down the track and the band probably pulled off one of their best performances. The set was awesome. The band played with vigor and excitement and really let their passion come through their songs. To me, it felt like the band had stepped up to the next level by being the support act, playing at the infamous rock venue, The Annandale. They ripped through the songs of their self titles EP and played a few new numbers they're hoping to record soon. They really encaptured what I call the "Triple J sound". Listeners to that station may know what I mean. This band could easily put in the same category as an After The Fall, Trial Kennedy, Kisschasy et al. Definitely worth the price of admission.
Perth's Sugar Army have had a pretty big year. They're getting solid airplay on alternative radio, have been praised for their album and live show. Having heard very little of their stuff, I was intrigued and I went in with a high expectation, especially after being blown away by Here Come The Birds. And to be honest, I was disappointed. Yes, the band has good following and most of the crowd loved every second of it. Yes, they played tight and technically, I can't fault their set. And yet, I didn't enjoy it. It sounded very bland, very generic and failed to peak my interest once during their hour set. My highlight was the drunken idiot in front of me who kept yelling out to the band "to play something better/good" and when the band questioned him on what he wanted to hear his response was "to play some Slayer" and a part of me wished they had in the end.
