Strung Out - “Top Contenders”
August 31st 2011 09:50
To celebrate 20 years of full speed melodic hybrid of punk rock and metal riffage, Strung Out has come out with a best of as such. I wouldn’t say they’ve chosen their best tracks but probably more fan favourite and personal favourite tracks over their career of seven albums and seven EPs. (not including a live disc and the B-sides compilation)
The thing that I have always liked about Strung Out is they’ve perfected their brand of music that while it can be predicable, it’s always enjoyable. Yeah, we all have our favourite albums but a doubt any Strung Out fan can honestly say any one of their albums have been completely shit. Consistency works when you’ve built a huge fan base and have worked your craft for twenty years.
The album features “Firecracker” & “Bring Out Your Dead” from ‘Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues’. “Mind Of My Own” & “Too Close To See” from ‘Twisted By Design’. “Cementry & Velvet Alley” from ‘An American Paradox’. “Analog” from ‘Exile In Oblivion’, “Mission Statement” from ‘Blackhawks Over Los Angeles’ and “Black Crosses” & “Vanity” from ‘Agent Of The Undergound’. There’s the obligatory new track like “Ashes”.
While it’s a good cross section of the bands career there are some stingingly notable exceptions. No “Exhumation Of Virginia Madison” & “Matchbook”, stables in their live show and nothing from the first album at all. In the end I’m not sure how well thought out this was. The artwork was provided by frontman Jason Cruz and while it’s enjoyable from a fans perspective, probably a waste of money and not the best way to celebrate a milestone. A new album or a tour playing an album in its entirety would’ve been better.
Note: This reviewer has been alerted to the fact that I’m missing the other disc that has another 13 tracks including more new songs and tracks I thought were missing. Thank you Shock for your incompetence! (geez I hope they don't read this hahahahha)
