Street Dogs - “Street Dogs”

Every now and again I come across an album that reminds me why I feel in love with punk rock when I was 17 and why I still lean towards it now. It’s cathartic, anthemic and lifts me out of any dower mood I am in. The double kick drum that alters the rhythmic beating of my hear. The energy of a simple power chord and the uplifting soul of a gang vocal chorus. To me, punk rock as been the most positive musical influence that my friends sometimes don’t understand. So when I went for a walk today to give this album a good solid listen on my iPod I was blown away by how good it is. And now, some hours later, all I want to do is listen to this album over and over again.
Street Dogs is the perfect blend of Bouncing Souls harmonies and Dropkick Murphy’s simplicity. It’s songs to sing to. Songs to share. Songs to inspire and motivate. From the bagpipe intro through to the accordion driven closer of ‘Poor Poor Jimmy’, this is a solid album of 18 tracks that any punk fan will embrace. There’s nothing on this album that will be seen as new or genre redefining. It’s not meant to. What it is, is a bunch of guys who play music because they love it. They love punk rock and want to create their own piece to share to the world.
‘Rattle And Roll’ and ‘Punk Rock n Roll’ are great celtic punk songs with rock and groove. ‘Up The Union’ is a blue collar singalong dedicated to the unions. ‘Yesterdays’ sounds like a Bouncing Souls song that at first I thought it was. ‘Bobby Powers’ and ‘Fighter’ are great tales about ordinary men who leave an impact on a person and ’10 Wood Rd’ is a song dedicated to the band it’s fans over the last eight years.
“Street Dogs” is the bands fifth album an second for Tim Armstrong’s Hellcat label. The band featuring former Dropkick Murphy’s vocalist Mike McCoglan have made one of the best punk rock albums of the year. If you like your music with heart, passion and pride behind power chords and with a beer in hand, then you need to check this one out.
