Spinnerette @ The Factory 5/3/10

Just like Courtney Love was in the 90's Brody Dalle was in the first decade of 2000. The ultimate rock chick. She had the edgy voice. The killer songs and the look. The Distillers were so underrated it was not funny. Yet after a divorce, a remarry and a child some women change.
With the Spinnerette’s debut album there was glimpses of the former rock chick. There was still that edge while conforming to the modern rock sound. I was excited about seeing Spinnerette tonight. Seeing the rock chick in full flight in a small rock club venue like the Factory. However I left feeling underwhelmed. Age and life has taken away that edge. It almost felt like i was watching someone's hobby project get more limelight than it deserved. Brody looked like a mum. Overweight, lacking energy and bored. She was back home performing for the first time in years so you'd expect her to be excited. This was not the case. Her attempts to play the rock goddess fell flat. Her band seemed to go through the motions collecting a pay cheque. Brody looked like she'd rather be home with hubby Josh Homme and bub, but she attempted to give it her best. But good songs like ‘sex bomb’, ‘ the babes are wolves’ and ‘ghetto love’ sounded forced and lacked that grunt that Brody can put in songs.
Overall I felt as if someone I kind of held up on a pedestal fell tonight. I now wished i saw The Distillers back a few ago because tonight was a disappointment. And to think i named my old car after her. But like that car. It has seen better days.
