Skipping Girl Vinegar @ Raval 12/11/09

When I heard that Skipping Girl Vinegar (SGV) were playing a run of shows at the Macquarie Hotel venue Raval, I was a bit excited. I was so impressed with the band when I saw them play at Notes a few months back, that I looked forward to seeing them during the 3 show run.
The one thing I have to give the guys credit for is for playing at venues which really suit their style. Raval is set up with plenty of comfy couches, candlelit tables and a bar that makes some wicked cocktails. (many were consumed after the $3 beers downstairs). Opening act Jesse Morris Band played a nice jazz/folk fusion that set the mood for the 2 sets that SGV performed. Playing tracks off their debut album 'Sift The Noise' plus treating us with some new material the band are currently working on, the band performed at their peak once again. Joined on stage by violinist Kel, the Melbourne four piece were engaging, holding the attention of the room as they worked through tracks like 'Sift The Noise', 'One Chance'. 'Here Come The Lies' and my favourite 'River Road'. The new songs carried a similar sound to the tracks off the debut and I can't wait for it to drop in the new year.
The thing that has always impressed me by this band is how they love their audience. from the packaging to their album, to the animated video clips and tonight, Amanthi baked cookies for the audience to eat during the interval. (And they were awesome!!!). The group take immense pride in their art, which I feel can sometimes be lacking these days. Their grass roots, hands on approach is to be admired. I can not suggest strongly enough for everyone to check SGV out in the new year.
