Skipping Girl Vinegar @ Notes 22/5/09

June 17th 2009 10:00
It’s a very damp and wet Friday night in Newtown. The new venue Notes is in it’s 2nd week and tonight they have Sydneysiders Dead Letter Chorus and Melbourne indie folk group Skipping Girl Vinegar to entertain the dinner crowd.

The place felt like The Vanguard but modern, The Basement but classier. The tiny stage was being set up with an array of cardboard cut outs of animals stuck to the mic stands. A coffee table with some old books and an awesome old school red telephone. Knowing full well that the company I was with (Brommers and Noddy from Homebrew radio show) were massive fans of Skipping Girl Vinegar, there was an element of expectation. The guys played me the album but was only taking parts of it in so I couldn’t get an indication of the bands sound.

The four piece lined up side by side on the stage and kicked things off with tracks from their new debut album. There was something chic about the group. A sound I would describe as Indie folk/pop, they were cool, laid back alternative. Clearly a group who enjoy what they do and that passion was felt by the diners and appreciated by the hundred or so people there.

The songs had an organic flavor. Beautifully performed by the band with simple themes of driving all night, catching a tram home and enjoying the simple pleasure in life. The band interacted and engaged the audience. They even got Brommers up to help with one of the songs. The band looked like they enjoyed every minute they were up there, and by the end everyone in the room shared that same feeling. And I am sure they’ve also gathered some new recruits to their campaign to revive the lost art of letter writing. (if you contact the band, they will write you a letter. An old fashioned postal letter!)

Skipping Girl Vinegar won alot of fans with their set, and the guys told us later they’ll be back in a few months, so keep an eye out and catch the next time they’re in Sydney.

Dead Letter Chorus had, in my humble opinion, were blown away tonight by Skipping Girl Vinegar. The band rarely held my attention for more than one song in a row. The set lacked consistency in performance and songs to be really memorable. The moments that were good, I was impressed, but for the most part they just failed to fire for me. The mix of male/female vocals were nice but at the end of the night, there was nothing you haven’t heard from a million other bands who sound exactly the same that get played on triple j.

Skipping Girl Vinegar were the better of the two acts and I would suggest that maybe they should go out last and let Dead Letter Chorus open for them.
