Rolo Tomassi - “Cosmology”
June 10th 2010 17:45
This is a really difficult album to listen to. The riffs are solid but there’s no flow between them so the songs sound more like abstract pieces thrown together than a crafted piece of music. The screaming vocals are to high end and uncomfortable to the ears. While I must admit, hearing a girl doing death metal screams is cool, it still doesn’t make it any good.
The credit that I have to give Rolo Tomassi is the fact their sound is unique and I haven’t heard a band like it before. The best way I can describe them is a cross between Mr. Bungle and Cradle Of Filth. The moments of quiet during keyboard spots and when the vocals are actually sung are great, but they are stuck in the middle of chaos and screamo antics that I can’t really get into.
The album does tend to find some cohesion towards the end with ‘Kasia’ with it’s epic Muse sounding keyboards and vocalist Eva Spence singing for most part of the song. There is less mess with the music and tracks like ‘Sakia’ and ‘Tongue’ come across as great songs only ruined by the painful screamed vocals.
Part death metal, part prog rock, part screamo and part jazz fusion, Rolo tomassi certainly mix it up but sadly it doesn’t make for a great sound. Limited appeal to those who can actually tolerate this long to sit through the whole album repeatedly.

Once again a little reminder that there's less than a week in my little competition to see Katie Noonan and The Captains play at The Metro in Sydney on Saturday June 19th. To enter head back to my interview with Katie and leave a comment. 2 double passes are up for grabs!!! Comp ends on the 17th. So whatcha waiting for????
