Regina Spektor @ The Opera House 27/04/2010
May 3rd 2010 07:34
On a beautiful cool April night where the lights of the city seemed to shine a little brighter than usual a shy and slightly awkward Russian born New Yorker walked onto the stage of the Sydney Opera House sat down at a grand piano and filled the packed room with her mesmerizing voice.
As each song is sung and met with thunderous applause her confidence grows. She engages the surrounding audience more. Her backing band are supportive in music and in presence. When they get up to leave they leave behind a comfortable performer in control, moving away from the piano to sing about eye colour stereotypes and her neighbor having sex to her songs. She is humble in telling us we have to suffer her guitar playing and when she announces the final song ‘Summer In The City we beg for more. Two hours doesn't seem long enough when it comes to being awe struck by Regina Spektor.
Her angelic yet sultry voice filled the Opera House as she performed songs of her recent album “Far” like ‘Laughing With’, ‘Eet’, ‘The Calculation’ and ‘Human Of The Year’. We were treated to older songs of “Soviet Kitsch” such as ‘Ode To Divorce’ and ‘Sailor Song’. But the biggest response was when she played ‘On The Radio’, ‘Samson’ and ‘Fidelity’ from the brilliant “Begin To Hope” record.
Her popularity is evident by this sell out tour and its no wonder. Regina's music is playful, heart rendering and chic. And if it sounds like I am rambling on a bit, its because I am absolutely in love with Regina Spektor!
