NOFX-wolves in wolves clothing

NOFX have transformed. Once they were the backbone of melodic punk rock. Their songs were silly tales about lesbians, drinking, weird people they meet and everyday situations. There was nothing to serious about their lyrics. Melvin and El Hefe would playing the fast crunching riffs, Smelly pioneered the double kick drum beat and Fat Mike's nasal vocal was enough to keep the fans happy.
Then George W Bush came into power, pissed the band off and got all political on War on Errorism. And from that, they’ve found a new voice. A voice of dissent. A voice to challenge the status quo. Gone are songs about lesbians and now the theme is religion.
“Leaving Jesusland” and “You Will Lose Faith” heavily criticize organized religion and religions narrow minded view on society values. In fact, this album heavily attacks narrow mindedness. In “The Marxist Brothers” they criticize the protest movement and how capitalized it has become. In “USA-holes” it’s the American people. “One Celled Creature” is attacking idiots in general and on “60%” they attack the new waves of bands coming through with corporate sponsorship and who care more for their looks than their fans.
Sure, there’s still some fun songs like “Cool And Unusual Punishment” which is about a Japanese S & M club, but the tone overall is a nasty vicious spit at the world. And I wonder Fat Mike is over it. Maybe it’s a sign that the band maybe winding down. On “60%” he states they “only play three months a year and some years we take off”. And if they do wind it down, it will be a shame. Despite the anger, the songs are still good, if not some of their best work musically.
NOFX are not the same band they were in the 90’s. And they’re not the same band they were in the 80’s. And who knows what they will be next decade if they make it? But I still love ‘em and I’ll keep buying the cd’s just like every other NOFX fan.
