NOFX- Coaster

26 years is along time to be doing a job. No matter how much fun you have doing it. And with those years mounting there can be a tendency to take it easy. Phone it in as it may. The same fire that burned in the belly all those years ago can become smoldering ambers after more than a quarter of a century.
Thankful NOFX show no signs of letting that fire burn out. Yeah, they are now 40 and have families but it doesn’t mean they’ve slowed down the partying. Fat MIke still drinks and does drugs like he did 20 years ago. (Anyone who saw there TV series Backstage Passport will remember the “Green Dragon”)
And this album seems to be a bit of a middle finger to settling down and sobering up. “First Call” is about a bar near his house to go drinking at. “I Am An Alcoholic” testifies that he indeed likes to drink and take lots of pills.
Like the previous two NOFX albums, there’s the strong political and religious statements that have seen this band transform from gutter punks to political spokesmen in the same vein as Green Day, The Clash and The Dead Kennedy's. Tracks such as the opener “We Called It America” is post George W Bush look at America and how it has alot of apologizing to do to the world to make peace again. “Blasphemy (The Victimless Crime)” attacks organized religion and is a direct follow on from the last record Wolves in Wolves Clothing.
“Creeping Out Sara” is typical NOFX silliness in songs. Sometimes I think the humour is lost in punk rock, but this song talks about an encounter of Fat MIke meeting Sara from Tegan and Sara fame and generally insulting her by accident.
While the message boards will debate whether NOFX are still relevant or whether this release is a return to form, in my opinion it’s another solid NOFX album. After 26 years they know what works. And to be honest, they probably don’t care anymore if everyone likes the songs or not. From the beginning it’s always about having fun and playing some music together and after 26 years they still are and they still make it look like the best fucking job in the world.
