No Use For A Name @ Annandale Hotel 7/8/11

Even a crisp wet Sunday night wasn't enough to keep punters away from seeing so cal legends no use for a name perform at the Annandale. While the crowd were more pushing mid thirties there was still that feeling in the air for a special night of good old punk rock!
Homeward Bound were really good. Solid punk act with great songs to bob your head to because at our age headbanging and moshing is not a viable option.(or so I thought, but more on that later) The twin vocal attack worked for them and a reasonable crowd watched the openers proving their reputation is justified. Definitely a band I need to seek out more often.
The Optionals I've caught a few times now and they always deliver a good set. The three piece from Sydney warmed up the crowd for No Use with punchy punk numbers with solid hooks.
For me it was all about no use for a name. One of the fat wreck chords originals their songs are catchy melodic anthems that inspire singalongs. Featuring two new members in Boz from the Mad Caddies on drums and Chris from Lagwagon the new line up also meant a renewed energy and it was on show tonight.
It was more than a best of set. The last night of the tour, the band wanted to end with a bang and that was achieved. Yes, there was some of the most lamest stage diving in history but then again, let's not forgot the average age of the crowd. There was plenty of energy, plenty of laughs and plenty of good songs to the drink and sing too.
Opening with "On The Outside" No Use hammered the Annandale crowd for over an hour an half with fan favorites and classic melodic punk. There was barely a moment to catch your breath and take a sip of your beer in between singing and laughing at people, as Chris put it "stage collapsing" where they'd get up and sort of jump off instead of diving into the pit.
Tracks like "Not Your Saviour", "Coming To Close", “Justified Black Eye", "Invincible" and "The Answer Is Still No" were highlights from a lengthy career from a band who have a solid and loyal fan base. The encore included the b side "Let Me Down" and ending with "Feeding The Fire" it was such a fun and exciting set from no use that, to be honest, they could've played for another hour and we'd still want more. God I love punk rock.
