My Chemical Romance - Danger Days : The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys
November 29th 2010 08:31
A lot has been made about the My Chemical Romance. Rising up as the leaders of emo rock in early to mid 2000’s culminating in their masterpiece concept album “The Black Parade”. It is easy to judge this band on their past work, the movement and scene they helped create and god knows millions of message boards and forums have been quick to dismiss the band.
But here’s the thing. No matter what, you can’t take away from the fact that My Chemical Romance can write a brilliant song. And on this new album they have progressed from an emo punk band to a stadium rock band and fits together without compromising the amazing music. This is an album to move to. To make you get up and dance. It is in stark contrast to the dark and often brooding “The Black Parade”.
Once again, we have a concept album. A comic book style over-the-top 70’s action hero group called The Killjoys who battle in what appears to be a post apocalyptic future against an evil multinational corporation. Mixing old school garage punk and expanding it to a grandiose level of theatrics, power chords and power ballads. The songs still hook you in, it’s just the style they are delivered has changed. Opening track and lead single (the ridiculously titled) ‘Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)’ has an infectious riff and chorus. ‘Sing’ is a massive call to arms rock song. ‘Planetary (Go!)’ is backed by a dance beat with Gerald’s clever lyrical phrasing and is a great dance song. The only traces of their emo rock lineage is the track ‘S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W’ and even that still follows the sounds of the rest of the album.
Yes, this album is different. Yes, they will piss some of their old fans off. But, this album should not be written off. They have progressed and moved forward. Sounding somewhere between Queen, Bowie, Iggy and Janes Addiction, this album is infectious and catchy as all hell. Give this album a chance and base it on it’s merits and not the reputation of the band performing it and you will be blown away by a solid rock album.
