Mumford & Sons - sigh no more

March 4th 2010 06:22
English folk music. A term that may bewilder most people. Surely it’s a contradiction? If someone had said to me 12 months ago that one of the biggest indie acts to come out of the UK were a folk band I would’ve brushed it away as a joke. And yet, here I am currently listening to and absolutely loving Mumford & Sons “Sigh No More”. A indie filled folk album with a hell of a lot of soul and passion....and banjos. Lots of cool banjos!!!

12 beautifully crafted tracks that make up this album and the ease in which you can listen to this record, you will hardly know when in 40 minutes, the last track fades and it’s over. The songs tell tales of love, realizations, hope and loss. The music creates a mood and takes you on a journey through every track. Whether it be the building crescendo of ‘The Cave’. The ebb and flow of ‘Roll Away Your Stone’, or the melancholy rawness of ‘Blank White Page’. The songs require you to stop and really listen to them.

Thumping bass drum mixed with intricate banjo riffs over simplistic chords creates Mumford & Sons variety of folk. While at times the tracks can lean towards bluegrass or towards straight up indie pop, the band have created a sound that hasn’t reached this large scale audience before. It is of little wonder then that ‘Little Lion Man’ topped triple j’s annual Hottest 100 poll last year. Even though it was released last year, expect this record to be a favourite in 2010.
