Megadeth - rust in peace

Dave Mustaine and Megadeth have always had to live in the shadows of Metallica. Since he was unceremoniously booted from the what became the greatest metal band on the earth, Megadeth have always played second fiddle. Even though they had some good songs and showed plenty of metal potential, their albums always lacked that killer punch. Then they made “Rust In Peace”. An album that will go down in history as their masterpiece and their defining opus.
With “Rust In Peace” there is those trademark blistering solos that any metal guitarist could pull off but it was the first time it felt that both Mustaine and Marty Frieldman really worked in sync with their guitar work. Simple rhythm riffs underneath melodic guitar lines and topped off with great bass and drum work. Dave found his voice as a metal vocalist. A great mix of typical 80’s hair metal high pitched vocals mixed with a deeper, almost spoken raw vocal that would typify the Megadeth sound for the years to come.
The melodic ‘Lucretia’ through to ‘Hanger 18’, ‘Polaris’ and ‘Holy Wars...The Punishment is Due’ are stand out tracks off this album. ‘Dawn Patrol’ saw Megadeth venture into a different, alternate sound in which the song is bass driven and Dave sounds like he might’ve smoked a few cones before delivering the lyrics. The impressive thing about this album is that Megadeth created a truly heavy album without having to resort to drop D or B tunings. Dave and the boys were able to create crunching, bone crushing riffs all in standard tuning. And even when the songs suddenly stop to transform into a different key or time signature, it still felt like a natural addition to the song where in the past, it sounded disjointed and forced.
Megadeth, in the albums 20th anniversary have begun to play it live, in it’s entirety and will do so when they tour Australia as apart of the first ever No Sleep Til..festival this December. It will be a magical set.
