Me First & The Gimme Gimmes - ruin Johnny's bar mitzvah

December 6th 2010 21:45
So when your a punk rock supergroup covers band who claim they will play any gig- Weddings, birthdays, bar mitzvah’s, little did they know, someone would take them up on that. So fulfilling a (drunken) promise. Spike, Fat Mike, Joey, Chris and Dave flew out to play a young jewish boys bar mitzvah, in front of all his friends and elderly Jewish family. The end result is one of the funniest, most bizarre live albums you’ll ever hear. Playing to an almost silent room at times, the boys churn through some of the best cover band rock songs played with sloppy abandon and mediocre timing than you’ll ever hear. Listening to this I wonder, how did the family feel hearing 70’s and 80’s classic rock songs, which they probably didn’t know too well to start with, played at breakneck punk rock speed?

Destroying classics like ‘Stairway To Heaven’, Blondie’s ‘Heart Of Glass’ and as Fat Mike described as “the most overrated band on Earth” Beatles ‘Strawberry Fields’, Me First deliver the funniest, punk rock album in history. Granted, they are known for their covers and for taking the piss out of songs (as anyone who has seen them live can attest) but this shows what can happen at parties with bad cover bands. Except they are real musicians. Real drunk punk musicians.

Highlights are clearly the in between banter between songs. Spike is in fine form when he tells the bewildered crowd “alot of people have come a long way today and had to get up real early to be here, so lets hear it for Me First and The Gimme Gimmes!” Or when they get Johnny’s grandfather up to sing the traditional Jewish song ‘Hava Nagila’ during the secret track.

Johnny was one lucky little kid. I would love to have Me First play one of my parties. But instead I will have to make do with seeing them play at this years 1st No Sleep Til festival. God knows what to expect and I doubt the band know themselves. Basically, it’ll be like watching your pissed mates get together and ruin some good songs. God love punk rock.
