Living With Lions - “Holy Shit”

Straight up, no nonsense, good old melodic punk rock. Melodic riffs, sing along gang chorus’ and chock full of anthems to sing arm in arm with a mate with beer in hand. Reminding me a little bit of The Flatliners record of last year, this is catchy and has enough hooks to get you in and keep you in.
The addition of a new vocalist hasn’t taken away from the reputation Living With Lions have built for themselves in the few short years together. There’s a sincerity in the songs that make it seem more real than a lot of other plastic sounding punk bands out there today. Musically, the band aren’t reinventing the genre. It’s fast paced, loud and filled with heart and balls. What it does do is kick a lot of ass and comes across as solid record you’ll find yourself going back to over and again as the songs get implanted in your mind.
The energy kicks off with the opening track “Pieces”, its momentum building intro before the vocals kick in sets the scene for the rest of the album. It’s just one kick ass track after another. Lead single “Honesty, Honestly” is a slap in the face style track destined for syncopated jumping from the crowd. “Maple Drive Is Still Alive” is a great reflective track with its huge gang backing vocal and addictive drum line. “Rough Around The Edges” would be a great way to describe the band and is also an good track. In fact, they’re all good tracks and can’t find a bad one amongst them.
The band had a bit of controversy over the album cover. Meant to represent the Holy Bible but with the words Holy Shit caused the religious moral groups of America to lose their proverbial shit and wanted to the ban the release in its entirety. Thankfully sanity prevailed, because this is a cracking album and it would of been a shame to not get to listen to this record. Encompassing the values of melodic punk without sounding whiny, emo or sell outs, Living With Lions have nailed it with this record.
