Lisa Mitchell @ The Mona Vale Hotel-26/09/09

After selling out her first show at the Metro, I made the trek (a 3 hour public transport trek) out to the Northern Beaches to catch ex-Australian Idol contestant, Lisa Mitchell. The shy 16 year old with a unique voice captured many imaginations, but a show like Australian Idol was not the kind of show where she would have benefited from winning. But the insidious competition did open a lot of doors for young songstress as she has since travelled the world to work on various EP’s and her debut album.
Tonight's show at the Mona Vale was also a sell out. The crowd forced to line up outside in the unseasonal cold/wet weather for over an hour after doors were scheduled to opened. But inside the venue was a like a sauna. Packed in tight, all trying to get a good spot in front of the stage which after the music started was a smart move. The sound at the back of the room towards the bar was muddled and the only clear sound was the drums. Oh Mercy opened and sounded okay, but it was difficult to judge from the bar.
Lisa Mitchell walked on stage like a shy uncomfortable little girl, but when she sang, she took control of the room. Her sultry, whispery voice captivated the crowd. I’m pretty sure alot of the guys were there for the perv. Nerdy looking chicks seem to impress the pretty tanned beach boys. A special mention to the girl who gave myself and a professional photographer dirty looks for just trying to do our jobs, thanks for being a bitch. In fact, I lost all enjoyment of the show by the punter etiquette shown at the Mona Vale. Maybe I’m an inner city snob but I didn’t enjoy the venue and hence couldn’t enjoy Lisa as much. Which is a shame because she sounded really good. it goes to show that to enjoy a live experience, it’s not only the artist on stage that makes a great gig, it’s also the venue and the crowd. Tonight, I didn’t like two of those elements. I hate having to say that, but thats the way it went.
