Katie Noonan & The Captains - “emperor’s box”

Not too many can deny that one of Australia’s most beautiful voices belongs to Katie Noonan. Her angelic vocals have been mesmerizing audiences for most part of this century from her time fronting the band George to Elixir to solo albums and now her new musical venture, The Captains. With “Emperor’s Box” what we get is a return to the alternative pop sounds that brought Katie success while with George. The album is a rich tapestry of musical collaboration with Noonan’s voice floating over the top breathing life into the music.
A more personal album lyrically with themes of life, love, loss, grief, friendship and more importantly family. Songs like ‘Little Boys’ and ‘Space Between’ are songs dedicated to her two sons, while ‘Golden’ is a love song for her husband. At times this album reminds of a mix between Bjork and Portishead, light and powerful and simply engaging.
Featuring guests in the writing and performance from the likes of Sia, Josh Pyke and Tim Finn. Produced by Nick Didia (who has worked with little known acts Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen!) and recorded at Grove studios where it all began for Katie when George recorded their debut, you get the sense that these songs are as good, if not better than the ground breaking ARIA award winning “Polyserena”.
A great album to put on during the cold winter nights curled up on the couch with a good book and bottle of red, it’s music created by a true artist and should be deemed in the same light-as art.
