Joey Cape’s Bad Loud - “Joey Cape’s Bad Loud”
July 11th 2011 10:49
With the likelihood of Lagwagon fading away into obscurity, front man and talented songwriter Joseph Cape III needs a new outlet. Because having his own solo work, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, Bad Astronaut and The Playing Favourites clearly isn’t enough for the man! The Caper has unleashed his Bad Loud. A collection of musicians he has previously worked with brought together to add weight to the tracks of his 2nd solo record, ironically titled “Doesn’t Play Well With Others”.
Joey set about the ambitious task of releasing one track a month for a year through his website in 2010 which made up the 12 tracks on “Doesn’t Play Well With Others”. This album sees some of those tracks expanded into a full rock band sound not sounding to dissimilar to Bad Astronaut. For me, who I’ll admit is a massive fan of his work, is better than the solo record. With a band behind him the songs sound complete and add life to what is his very melancholic, Elliott Smith inspired acoustic tracks.
Fan favourite, ‘Canoe’ kicks off this record which again was sold through Joey’s website at a name your price concept. Other standout tracks on this record is homage to a home away from home in ‘Montreal’. The brilliantly titled ‘The Fish Rots From The Head Case Down’, ‘Going For Bronze’ and a great reworking of a track from his first solo album ‘What We’ve Become’. A track written for his wife.
The Caper maybe onto something with his new band. The elements that made Bad Astronaut so good are there and it’s clear he still has the ability to write great songs. It would be great to see this project take off for him because I still claim he is one of the best songwriters in music today.
