Arguably one of punks best song writers is Joey from Lagwagon, Bad Astronaut, The Playing Favourites, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes and a thousand other bands it seems. But the one thing that makes this musician a genius is the fact with each new band and album, ity of writing and musicianship gets better. This is Lagwagon's frontman first solo record. (He did do a split album with Tony sly from No Use For A Name a while back)
The unfortuante timing of this release comes after the latest Lagwagon EP, and despite the solo album being recorded before that EP, there's alot of crossover in songs such as 'Errands', 'Memories and Landmines', "B-sides' and 'Mission Unaccomplished'. It's other tracks like 'We're Not in Love Anymore', 'Non Sequitor' and 'Home' that will thril fans of the Caper. His lyrics are a perfect example of writing as an art form with hidden meaning and open to interpretation. The wit and sarcasm is still there ('The Ramones are Dead') as is the themes of love and relationships ('What We've Become', 'We're Not in Love Anymore') that are ever present in Joey's work. The music is simple, acoustic and beautifully mixed.
Some solo records feel like a collection of songs thrown together to make a buck, but this album seems complete. A crafted album from the stripped back 'Errands' right through to the rock out outro of 'Home'. Fans will lap this release up, but it will hopefully garner a new audience who appreciate good songs and true musicianship that Joey displays.
