Jebediah @ Annandale Hotel 09/12/10

December 14th 2010 22:29
Nostalgia is a curious beast. About this time last year I saw the farewell of one of my favourite Aussie bands when I was a kid in Bodyjar at The Annandale. It was a night where this 30 year old regressed back to his teenage years. Tonight saw the return of another great Aussie band of the 90's, Jebediah return to the stage after a 5 year hiatus. The sold out Annandale crowd were filled with people just like me. Approaching middle age, looking to remember those heady days of post grunge 90's where you're influences came from listening to Triple J and the wave of Brit Pop bands that were dominating and influencing bands around the world.

Drawing from grunge, punk and Brit Pop, Jebediah emerged on the back of catchy tracks like 'Leaving Home', 'Harpoon' and 'Fall Down'. Successes came from a heavy tour schedule and the brilliant records 'Slightly Odway' and 'Of Someday Shambles'. Albums that were soundtracks to us growing up, leaving school and making the transition into adulthood. And while we have moved on, we've kept those songs in the back of hearts and hidden on iPods. The influence is still there as we waited for the band to hit the stage.

After dealing with a few technical demons and hearing Kevin Mitchell's bad jokes, the band launched into those classic songs we loved when we were younger. The crowd morphed back in time to 1997. We jumped up and down and screamed out every word. The band looked excited to be back together playing music. You couldn't wipe the smile off Vanessa's face. A Gyroscope cover and a best of set including a brand new song from the album they have been working on. Realising the ridiculous pageantry and facade that is the band leaving to only return a second later for an encore, Kevin decided to just tell us "Just pretend we've walked off and have come back on for the encore so cheer." before giving us the above mentioned tracks.

When it was done, the kids we had become return to the present and left with a great night of reminiscing with old friends.

A Gyroscope cover?? Ummm... Jebs played Monument - an early B-side song of theirs - which Gyroscope have subsequently covered. When Kev introduced the song as a cover his tongue was firmly in his cheek.
