Interview : The Rooftops
November 12th 2010 12:32
In what maybe late notice to some, this Saturday night sees reggae popsters The Rooftops hit The Mac in Surry Hills. Their new single ‘Something So Familiar’ is out and the guys gave us a run down on the single and the road ahead.
What’s new with the Rooftops?
We are touring Australia to promote the release of our new single, Something So Familiar. Things are looking up!
Describe your sound
Listening to The Rooftops is like having a holiday. It’s fun, fresh and exciting. It’s somewhere in between soul, reggae and pop, with jazz influences and uplifting vibes.
What’s the new single 'Something So Familiar' about?
I’ve always been fascinated by the awkward pride people have about their hometowns. Everybody wants to leave them at some stage in their lives, but most of us return singing its praises. This phenomenon is really its about appreciating and valuing what is familiar to us; our family, friends places and histories.
When can we expect the new album?
The new album is in its final stages of mixing but we are in no rush to get it out there. There may be some copies floating round at Woodford Folk Festival when we play there after Christmas, but we aren’t expecting the official release til after Easter.
What are The Rooftops plans for the Summer period?
After we wrap up this National Tour in December, we’ll be getting ready for Woodford. We have six gigs up there and it’s going to be quite an adventure. Last time we played at Woodford we met the producer of this album, Mr Percival, and one thing led to another… who knows what will happen this time!
What are you hoping Santa will bring on Xmas?
We are working on a song at the moment that goes… ‘ All we need is money and time, money and time, money and time…’. I don’t know if Santa deals in such things though. A clone of our soon-to-be-departing-overseas sax player would be nice
You’re coming to the Mac, what can we expect?
This will be our first ever gig in Sydney so we are going to pull out a special, extra long show. We’ll be doing three sets, chockers full of new songs and old favourites. We love doing these kind of gigs because we really get to relax into the songs. It’s then when the really memorable stuff comes out. We just found out that our friends from Brisbane, Laneous and the Family Yah will be playing the late set after us. It’s going to be one hell of a night!
Finally, first song on a mix-tape?
I’d have to say our new single of course, but second up would be Call Me Al by Paul Simon. Its a classic song that brings back memories of my childhood and yet, aside from the ultra-80’s drum sounds, is an absolute timeless classic.
