Interview : Jim Jones Revue
January 28th 2011 22:46
Oozing the cool that comes from a time when rock n’ roll first gave birth to a four/four beat and 12 bar blues swagger, the Jim Jones Revue are everything that makes you want to grab your girl and swing her around the room. The band released their second album late last year “Burning Your House Down” and are about to play in Australia for the first time touring with the Big Day Out festival.
The bands guitarist Rupert flew out to the country just after New Years for a quick holiday before the rest of the band join him for the first show in Auckland. “It’s been good to have this short break. I got to spend Christmas and New Years at home which was good. We’ve been on the road for two months straight so it’s nice to take it easy a bit.”
The band are preparing for more time away from home this year. The success of the new album will allow the band to travel around the world. “After Australia we’re going to the States. The album will be released there soon, so we’re going to play some shows and go to SXSW. Then back home in time for the European summer festival circuit. In August we’re going to Japan and then hopefully we’ll come back here for some more shows after that.”
Mixing elements of ’50’s and ’60’s rock, the band really got their break from excited England DJ’s who jumped all over their 2008 self titled first record. “You know we only pressed 1000 copies of that record. We recorded it not long after starting in 2 days. But thankfully Radio 1 & 2 in England picked it up and it sort of exploded from there.”
With “Burning Down Your House”, the band took a bit more time and a more professional approach to recording, hiring the talents of Bad Seed/Grinderman drummer Jim Sclavunos. His influence was a key element in the overall sound of the record. “He’s like a walking rock encyclopedia! I knew Jim’s wife and have been a huge fan of Grinderman so I asked him to come down and work with us and he jumped at it. He provided a real sense of structure and organization to the process. It’s going to be good to catch up again on this tour.”
Went the promoters offered a spot to the Jim Jones Revue, it was a no brainer for the band to jump on board, even from a fan perspective. “oh man I can’t wait to see Iggy and The Stooges, The Black Keys, LCD Soundsystem...” Citing bands like The Stooges and MC5 as influences on top of greats like Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, Rupert also confessed Australian bands have influenced the band too. “AC/DC and The Birthday Party have always been some of my favourite bands.”
The Jim Jones machine doesn’t stop with talks of recording an EP towards the years end. “We haven’t written anything yet mind you, but we have an idea to do a EP. With so much touring it’s hard to think about writing new songs. But the plan is to get it out this year.”
