Death To Your Speakers - news, reviews & interviews

Interview : Bluejuice

March 8th 2010 07:19
Ok so as I may of mentioned earlier in the year, one thing I aim to do this year is do a few Q&A interviews. And what a better start than talking to Jamie Cibej, bassist for Bluejuice. Bluejuice are about to head out on a national tour with The Holidays in April. Dates added below.

Q&A-Bluejuice

1. Commiserations for missing out on ARIA for “Broken Leg”. Did you wish you could’ve stole one of Empire Of The Sun’s one as consolation?
Thank you. I'm not sure it would have been wise to mess with Luke Steele that night, dressed as he was like an apache cyborg. I reckon our director was robbed of the best video award, but I'm probably still just bitter at having had to jump up and down for 6 torturous weeks.

2. You guys got the call up to Good Vibrations after the Killers pulled out, how was that festival compared to the all the others you’ve been a part of this summer?
Remarkably similar to Big Day Out in terms of staging and size, though we spared the Good Vibes crowds the sight of our yellow jumpsuits. It was probably in our contract actually - "no manginas".

3. “Head Of The Hawk” has been a success, while recording it did you think anyone was going to like it?
Given it was our first record on a label, we were kind of counting on people liking it. Not that the label pressured us in any way, but we were conscious of there being more at stake than before. We were fairly confident that 'Broken Leg' would do well, but certainly not to the extent that it did.

4. The videos for the 2 singles “Broken Leg” and “Ain’t Telling The Truth” have exposed some serious acting talent, could TV or movies be on the cards for Bluejuice?
Jake's done quite a bit of acting - he was on a Channel 7 skit show for a little while. But I'm assuming you're talking about Jerry and my 0.3 second appearance as Surprised Chefs 1 and 2. The performance of my hideous ponytail will endure long in the minds of discerning cinema buffs.

5. You’ve been recently announced as a part of Triple J’s One Night Stand playing out in Alice Springs, what are you expecting from fans from the Alice?

No idea to be honest. We've never played in the Northern Territory before, and are really looking forward to it.

6. What are on the cards for Bluejuice for the rest of 2010?
That One Night Stand show marks the start of our April/May tour, and then we're apparently heading overseas for a few weeks. In between all that we'll be writing for the next album which we'll probably record sometime this year.

7. Talk us through the whole songwriting process Bluejuice goes through?
Swearing, angst, threats of fisticuffs. Like any healthy creative environment, I assume.

8. What has been the highlight for the band in the last 12 months?
The success we've had this year has allowed us to quit our jobs (more or less) and focus on the band full-time. After years of juggling both the band and work, it's been nice to get stuck into writing regularly and touring heavily. And by touring I mean drinking.

 9. Last question, if you were asked to make a mix tape, what’s the first song you would put on there?
"Full Grown" by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Anyone who can sit through that hilarious screaming misogyny can sit through any mix tape.
