How to Thrash

The masses believe that KISS is the epitome of heavy metal and At The Gates is a lame band. That's like comparing a Big Mac patty to Wagyu beef.

This is the low down of what's really going on underneath the guitar shredding.

Like most under-represented things, heavy metal can be misunderstood and alienated. During one's introduction to the genre, this is somewhat welcomed. There's nothing like striking fear into everyone's hearts just by donning black garb and giving cold looks. The style is undoubtly loosing it's edge with it's popularity.

Deena Wienstein stated in a study of the genre that
heavy metal embodies a shameless attack on the cultural values of Western civilisation. But to its fans it is the greatest music ever made.

I couldn't agree more.

Thrash Metal challenged Heavy Metal like Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church.

It stripped back the hairspray extravaganza and returned to the essential message of keeping it fast, loud and pure.

The distance between the band and fans was physically, emotionally and attitudinally erased. Music wasn’t over-produced and was recorded as raw as possible. Band members would have a beer with fans before jumping on stage and interacted during the set. Albums took weeks, instead of months, to record.

During the 1980’s thrash was far more aggressive, faster and louder than their glam contemporaries or any previous ‘classical’ heavy metal bands (Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple).

Gone was the glitter and Spinal Tap-esque Stone Hedge props. Fans of the older style couldn’t see why Thrash metal was so aggressive and fast for speed’s sake. They saw it as sacrificing tunefulness for primal bludgeon. In some modern cases Atreyu for example, this is true, but placing Metallica's Kill 'Em All in this category is unthinkable.

The genre was pioneered by the ‘Big Four’ of Thrash Metal; Slayer, Anthrax, Metallica and Megadeth.

Some historians suggest that thrash was created as a backlash to the feminist movement as it reinstates ‘macho’ stereotypes of anger, strength, and violence. Germaine Greer, not surprisingly, is strongly opposed to the genre.

This is a generalised view; there are powerful women portrayed in metal, such as the classic band Girlschool and Michele Madden of the Australian band Tourettes.

"Blast beat" drum patterns came into the fore, with rapid alternating strokes on the snare and double bass drums to create a wall of sound. These blast beats are carried into every sub-genre of Thrash and is now a key sound of metal. The sound is like a drill on speed or a skipping dance track. But my god, does it work against the frantic guitar work.

Speed metal is a sub-sub-genre, and just like the name suggests, has a very fast tempo. ‘Classical’ and Thrash bands play songs that can be termed speed metal, such as Slayer's album God Hates Us All.

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and hardcore punk influenced the creation of Thrash. Some leading NWOBHM bands are Iron Maiden, Diamond Head and Venom. Lars Ulrich was so inspired by the NWOBHM movement he felt the need to create Metallica.

Thrash lyrics focuses on concrete horrors of the real or possibly real world; power, political corruption and horrors done by people to others or to the environment. Megadeth draws on the political side in their most recent albums. However, this does not mean that all thrash metal has to follow these reoccurring themes. It’s a genre that’s constantly changing.

The themes of death, suicide and decay became so strong that thrash spawned another sub-genre creatively named death metal. Death metal increases the brutality component to thrash. The obvious differentation is that singers growl, snarl and use the throat to distort the voice. The vocals sounding thoroughly evil is essential to a death metal identity.

Not all bands can pull this off, and the term "Cookie Monster vocals" has been used to make fun of them.

The death metal lyrics are morbid and gruesome, but if you find them lacking in detail you can explore the spin off genre called gore metal. Songs can have a narrative quality, and there are on-going developments of themes and motifs that can span an album or the band’s overall persona.

There are often abrupt tempos and time signature changes. It’s extremely fast and has complex guitar and drum work. Blast beats patterns are used frequently.

Like Thrash metal, the instruments are down-tuned and are sometimes distorted.

Death Metal often gets confused with Black Metal. At face value band members of both genres can wear corpse paint; white foundation and black patterns on their faces. If they’re painted then chances are they’re also wearing a bastardized version of S&M gear meets thrash band shirts.

The genres are not usually identified on aesthetic forms alone so labels can’t easily be applied to some bands. This makes for vicious arguments on metal forums. Black Metal can be classified as adherence to the original style of fast guitars, limited production and a melancholic atmosphere. Or an easier way of identifying the style is on the lyrical or philosophical ideology of the music.

Originally Black Metal was in thematic opposition to Christianity. This has broadened since it was conceived and it now draws on Satanism, old Pagan traditions, fantasy and occultism.

Norwegian Black Metal attracted negative media attention when it started in the late 80’s to early 90’s.

Minorities in the sub-culture sporadically burned down a handful of heritage churches. Then in 1991 founding band Mayhem’s singer Dead committed suicide.

The popular (and I'll argue sell-out) black metal band Cradle of Filth portrays blood lust and demonic entities that do unmentionable sexual acts to nuns that is in strong contrast with their personal lives. After all, the singer, Dani Filth, has to read Disney stories to his toddler daughter each night.

The overlapping genres and grandiose melancholy has to be taken with a reality check. That’s why the greatest thing about metal is the duality of passion for the music as well as seeing the humour in it.

Fantastic post. I've never been into Metal or Thrash, apart from a little Metalica.
