Holy Growl Batman!
The most audible difference between "Batman Begins" and "Dark Knight" is the death metal growl Christian Bale evokes when he's dressed up as Batman in the latter film. And while most critics are left scratching their heads, I think it makes perfect sense.
Why did Bruce Wayne turn death metal in Christopher Nolan's latest rendition of Batman?
Out of all the superheroes Batman is the most gothic and brooding. His dark background and angst love life is another concept album filled with heavy metal lyrics. Batman presides over Gotham City. He also has a penchant for black. Now all he needs in long locks. You can't get any more goth than a bat for your universal symbol.
Allegedly it was Bale's idea to start lowering his voice, with the director and sound editor supporting the move and even making his original growl digitally lower.
"Batman is demonic-looking, he’s created not to instill trust but to instill fear into criminals. So there should be that shadow side to him.” Christian Bale said to Wales Online
Christian Bale has made that long shadow his own. Regardless of the sometimes silly death growl, Bale does an excellent job in reshaping the legend of Batman and making it his own. He's glamorous, moody and terrifically in control of the character. I have a new metal hero.

My theory is that Bale started listening to Children of Bodom somewhere between the first movie and the second.
