Heartbreak Club - “Our Horse Is Dead”
January 31st 2011 07:55
Just when I was starting to think the world had forgotten all about sugary pop punk, this album lands on my doorstep. Sydney/Melbourne/Newcastle based power pop punksters Heartbreak Club have nailed the art of catchy hooks, geek rock sentiment and fun rock songs to find yourself walking down the street singing one of their tunes before you know it.
Produced by Ed Rose (The Get Up Kids, Motion City Soundtrack) the band wear their influences on their sleeve. Think New Found Glory, think Motion City Soundtrack, think Weezer (the good Weezer songs anyway) maybe a bit of Fall Out Boy and you get where these guys are coming from. On the surface it’s just fun punk rock with enough variety in the music to stop it being just another bad repeat of a thousand bands that have tried to do the same thing and failed in the course of the last ten years.
Opening track ‘Are You Leaving Me’ is one of the stand outs on this album, fast and punchy and complete with woahs. ‘Truth Or Consequences’ and final track ‘(Another) Praise Chorus’ are nods to Jimmy Eat World in sound. The title track is a great anthemic track which makes me think of Sum 41 with it’s gang vocal and singalong chorus. The real surprise in Heartbreak Clubs variety comes in the songs ‘Like The Weather’ and ‘Depths Unseen’ a Weezer style ballad complete with geek charm and awkward emotion.
This album ticks all the right boxes and grows on you with repeated listens. I’ve gone from not being so sure at first to now really getting into this record. With t he guys planning on hitting the studio again this year, it’ll be interesting to see where they go from here. But if you’re a sucker for pop punk, check this one out.
