Gyroscope @ The Metro 18/06/10

After The Fall opened the night with a short punchy set of tracks everyone recognizes and wanted to hear. Which meant only one cut was taken from the last album "in exile". We were also treated to a couple of new tracks which have the band moving back towards their older sound in direction if the new tracks have anything to go by. The Vasco Era opened their set with torturous Beatles cover and then it degenerated from there. I just don't see the attraction in 3 drug addled people trying to put on a show as any form of musical entertainment. maybe if the songs were good, you would tolerate this, but I found the whole set uninspired and not even worthy of comment.
Being able to see a band play twice in the space of a week is to the benefit of reviewers because you can base you entire opinion on comparing the two shows. While I wasn't exactly impressed with their headlining slot at the the Come Together festival, tonight the band displayed less rock theatrics and let their solid songs do all the work. Focusing on new material from the latest disc "Cohesion", Gyroscope delivered on the hype that has surrounded them for the last few years. Notable mention needs to go to singer Daniel and he's awesome mullet and his pure rock n' roll moment leaping off the stage and walking up to the top bar upstairs while never missing a chord! Again, it's something I comment on alot, if the band is having fun on stage, then the crowd will have fun watching them and thats how it was tonight. I suppose with Powderfinger pulling the plug, someone needs to take over as everyones favourite Aussie band, and I think Gyroscope can take role.
