Gay Paris - “The Skeleton’s Problematic Granddaughter”
June 6th 2011 04:45
An artist like Tom Waits is a unique individual that has inspired many artists over the years, but few have been able to replicate even some of the man’s genius. And then, Gay Paris hit the local scene with a songwriting charm of the great man and even that gravelly vocal that makes the man so recognizable.
“The Skeleton’s Problematic Granddaughter” is Gay Paris’ debut record and is full of meaty 80’s barroom rock riffs, complete with blues swagger and oozing an almost cool sleaze...if there’s such a thing. And if there isn’t, Gay Paris have just invented it. The songs are to be accompanied by copious amounts of brown alcohol. (scotch, bourbon, whisky, rum - take your pick) They require you to adopt a southern redneck demeanor and I reckon a large cowboy hat or cigar wouldn’t go astray either.
Having developed a reputation on the live scene the last 12 months, this record is a snapshot of the good times had attending a Gay Paris show. It’s sexy in a hairy masculine way and just bleeds from your speakers. This album requires a big stereo sound system to fully enjoy it and listening on a iPod just won’t cut it. The chunky guitars, loose bass and WH Monks phlegm rolled vocals produce a juicy swampy sound that drags you in under it’s sweaty armpit and tells you why music today is shit.
Stand out tracks on this album are ‘Turns Out Your Not A Cowgirl’, ‘My First Wife, She Was A Fox Queen’, ‘Future Wolf & Gay Paris’ and ‘Soliloquy From Ether Station’. Gay Paris are the kind of band you wish you could be in and this is a great debut album. Seek it out.
