Fruit and Brujeria
A strange old man was asking me if he could come over to my place for dinner at the local fruit and veg shop when my checkout boy asked what my shirt meant. It was a t-shirt I had grabbed from Satyricon's gig in Oz and was promoting their latest album, Now Diabolical.
I was flustered and hot, so I said it was a Norwegian Death Metal band, expecting a moment's reprieve to find my change as he figured out what to say next.
Instead, the bloke surprised me by saying his friends are into "that kind of stuff" and wrote on my receipt a band name from his home country (Mexico).
The band is called Brujeria, which is Spanish for witchcraft. The thing that makes this grindcore band interesting is, like SlipKnot, they use pseudonyms, in this case they're drug fiends who sing/scream about their escapades and obivous satanism. It's pretty hard to believe that they use fake names so that they don't get caught by the FBI, but it's also kind of cute.
Sound wise, they're severly under produced, but unlike most undergroud bands, this doesn't add to their charm. Instead, it makes me wonder how great they would be if they stopped trying so hard. Sida de la Mente is a standout track. The others didn't leave a trace in my mind.
If you're looking for a different sound, go with Ill Nino's album, Revolution Revolución
. Granted, it's nu-metal, but it's still fucking excellent. I briefly listened to their most recent stuff and thought it well below par, so the 2001 album mentioned above is the way to go. You just have to look past the fact that they recently toured with Drowning Pool and the occasional vinyl scratching.
So this is what you have to do, click on this YouTube link and wait until you have the whole thing. Don't watch it (unless you're feeling masochistic), instead skip to 2 minutes 30 seconds, and watch from there onwards. There's your exotic fix for the day.
When I was 16 I took up a Spanish course after listening to that exerpt. I still have no idea what he says. Any translators?
