Frenzal Rhomb @ The Annandale 2/7/10
July 6th 2010 11:10
Oh the Annandale! 10 years young in it's current format and still one of the best live music venues that this city and this country has to offer! (sorry Melbourne but nothing touches on the Annandale.)
You knew you were in for a special gig when the crowd starts calling for Frenzal long before they came on. Due to my tardiness I missed Front End Loader but this week is more about fans of the Annandale Hotel than it is for fans of the amazing line up of artists performing. The jam packed bar made it impossible to move until the band launched into their set and the mosh pit began. It was like it was 1997 again. There was moshing, crowd surfing and stage diving like it was before security stopped the kids from having fun.
The boys are still funny as ever, even if the Doctor can be a tad annoying at times but unlike on Triple J now, tonight he had Jay to keep him in check. The band sampled a bit off every Frenzal release saving the classics like 'Never Had So Much Fun', 'Genius', 'Cones' and 'Punch In The Face’ to close out the set. In the space of an hour they had ripped through over 20 songs, talked alot of shit (like how the Annandale staff sell the best drugs) and even did a mock cover of Bad Religion's 'Generator' because Tom always wished he was in Bad Religion.
It was great to see any band at the annandale and especially a punk band. The perfect venue for punk rock. It's safe to refer to Frenzal Rhomb as iconic, like the Annandale, so tonight it felt right...it felt like home. Happy 10th birthday Annandale. (wished there was cake)
