Fear Factory - mechanize

So I confess that when I was a teenager full of angst, testosterone and hate, I loved Fear Factory. They were one of the most heavy and sonically brutal bands I had ever heard. Then as I grew up and my tastes shifted, I left them behind with alot of the other metal bands I listened to. Then, one day (thanks to my good friends at musicfeeds.com) this album lands in my letterbox. So, onto the iPod it went and then sat for a few weeks before I found the mood and the time to listen to it.
Straight away I felt something familiar. The brutal assault to the mid section by rapid fire kick drum. Burton’s vocals tearing your flesh one minute with his harsh screams before cradling you with his ethereal singing the next. Guitar and bass riffs that pulverize your limp carcass into submission....my god how good is it!!!!
In the time away from Fear Factory since ’98’s “Obsolete”, their sound has not really changed with “Mechanize”. The album seems like the perfect follow up despite the 12 years in between. (and a few albums in there as well) The songs are hard, fast and vicious. The precision of the music is mechanical. (no pun intended) The songs whip up a frenzy in your soul. The heart beats in double time. The blood simmers to a slow boil and for me, I was transported back to that angry young man of 17. Metal is the perfect outlet for angry boys.
The theme is standard Fear Factory fodder. Trying to find yourself in a world hell bent in making you conform into a particular model. Tracks like ‘Mechanize’, ‘Fear Campaign’ and ‘Designing The Enemy’ highlight the battle in achieving freedom through individualization. ’Christpoiltation’ sees the bands continuing criticism of religion and the church, with ‘Final Exit’ exploring the theme of death.
Fear Factory will not suit everyone’s taste. Metal never has, nor will it ever will. Fans of the band will already have this and love this. But I don’t think “Mechanize” will attract anyone new, with the exception of a new generation of angry young boys.
