Evil Eddie @ The Gaelic Club 26/02/11
March 5th 2011 03:08
After the 8:30 act was a no show and the crowd could be counted on 2 hands I began to worry. This weekend in Sydney is saturated in live music (Soundwave and the sideshows among others) and I started to suspect no one wanted to see Evil Eddie. Finally Herb hit the stage for some original Aussie hip hop with some cool beats and ok rhymes, even if he did look like he could've been out of Alexisonfire. Lumberjack flannel shirt, black jeans and a beard, Herb didn't look a rapper but he gave it a good crack to a apathetic crowd. “Black N’ Blues” highlighted police brutality. He also tackled topics like domestic violence which is always a heavy topic! But, he got drunk white boys up to dance so he wasn't too bad.
Before Eddie came on, some guy felt the need to bag Queenslanders in the small crowd. Ok, Eddie's lead single is called 'Queensland' but dude the state just went through it's worst crisis ever with floods and cyclones. Yes in NSW we may hang shit on them but now is not the time champion.
Evil Eddie warned us that first up would be weird shit but it still had that Butterfingers sound. A medley of Butterfingers classics was well received as was the single ‘Queensland’. He can bounce from rap to punk and back. His solo material leaned towards the rap rock side of things but still had that Butterfingers flavour. It just validates my idea that he WAS Butterfingers and any new band could pass of as Butterfingers and still work.
His solo work made me want to go out and buy it and the references to his old band made me enjoy it more.
