Emma Dean @ Raval 20/11/2010

With her new album out in stores and on line, Emma Dean chose the beautiful room Raval in the Macquarie Hotel to kick of her series of album launches across the country. The album in question “Dr Dream And The Pop Cabaret” is a wonderful piece of piano cabaret and knowing of her live performances including actors and theatrics, I was looking forward to this show.
The exquisite thing about Emma Dean’s music is her voice. She can move from a bitchy snarl to angelic voice to powerful jazz vocal all in the space of one song. Her songs are bouncy and catchy and while lyrically the themes may be more deeper and personal, the songs end up being fun and something you want to listen to over again to put in a good mood.
Being carried on stage in a straight by her drummer/brother/nurse Emma captured the room with a performance, not just a gig. Backed by her “imaginary friends”, GG, Henry and Dr Dream her psychiatrist. Emma took centre stage by her keyboard and performed tracks of the new album while the characters danced and mimed and moved around the stage and crowd. The crowd, dedicated fans to Emma, already knew the songs and we delighted when tracks like ‘Sincerely Fearful’, ‘Bigger Than You, Bigger Than Me’ and the powerful ‘Thunder’. Waiting until the end of the set to address the crowd, showed the importance of playing and staying in character for Emma.
If you have a soft spot for cabaret and music that has true theatrical feel to it, you will love Emma Dean and her stage show.
