Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows - “D.R.U.G.S”

Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows aka D.R.U.G.S have been built up with quite a bit of hype from the punk/post hardcore community. Featuring ex members of Chiodos, Matchbook Romance, From First To Last and Story Of The Year, the band started by slowly releasing singles of this record in late 2010 before Decaydance released this record in February. What you get with this album is healthy mix of post hardcore/emo in the same vein of old My Chemical Romance. It’s Heavy, its melodic and it’s filled with passioned screams and punishing riffs. Lyrically this album speaks of betrayal, heartache and disappointment. The standard emo fodder.
‘Graveyard Dancing’ opens like a Panic At The Disco song with a cabaret piano riff before launching into a harder rock number. ‘If You Think This Song Is About You, Ot Probably Is’ is a emotional questioning of an ex-lover with the singer Craig Owens heartache on show when he screams the line...”be honest/did you ever think of my name/did you ever get sick of the shame”. Then on ‘Lamented ET Animal’ he explains how this pain is for the fans when he says...”it’s like stabbing in the dark/i’m singing this one for you.”
“I’m Here To Take The Sky’ is a positive affirmation anthem that has a slight 80s stadium metal feel and is the kind of track of track you’d expect to hear on commercial FM radio. Which compared to the bitterness of ‘I’m The Rehab, You’re The Drugs” is a nice change in mood. But again, this is a heavy emo album.
Are D.R.U.G.S doing anything greatly original? Not really, but they breathing fresh air into the dying punk subculture and trying to reclaim some creditability back into the music. Forget the eyeliner, the black clothes, fringes and skinny jeans. This is metal lite/punk inspired emotional music for the disenchanted and forlorn. Well worth checking out when they are here for Soundwave Revolution.
