Death To Your Speakers - news, reviews & interviews

Dan Sultan @ Notes 11/11/10

November 23rd 2010 10:19
Tonight’s performance was always going to be a special event. Having just won a couple of ARIA awards including Best Male, this intimate show was always going to be a thank you from Dan to his loyal fans and a show of appreciation from the crowd for a wonderful singer and songwriter.

Opening in place for Archie Roach who had taken ill was former Magic Dirt front woman Adalita. Armed with her electric guitar, pedals and a fistful of new songs Adalita tried to win the crowd over. The problem lies here. Firstly for the songs and her sound, she needed a backing band behind her to add meat to the tracks. Or alternatively, used an acoustic especially seeing the venus is more suited to acoustic performances. Secondly, engage the crowd a little when playing to a small room of about hundred people. Don’t just finish and walk off without telling us it was your last song. Its sad when the biggest round of applause came after realised the set was over and more because it was not entertaining. Trying to sound like PJ Harvey in her younger days did not go over tonight. But hey, hopefully the album will be better.

Dan and Scott wandered out to little fan fare. Dan took a stool while Scott was happy to walk around the stage playing and the guys mixed it up with tracks from the latest (ARIA award winning) record “Get Out While You Can” plus some older tunes. They joked between each other and with the crowd. Told stories behind the songs. (‘Enemies’ was actually about riding in trucks across Australia and taking ampethemines- but Scott thought that wouldn’t go down well if played on the radio so changed the chorus to ‘Enemies) and generally had a fun time on stage playing music. The way artists and gigs should be.

The setting at Notes suited Dan in acoustic mode. People sat and supped on wine and cocktails, eating cheese platters or having full three course meals. The only downside is the fact it was freezing inside but apparently they couldn’t fix that. But in the end it didn’t really matter as Dan put on a performance that has seen him receive the accolades he rightly deserves. He has a fantastic voice and his music suits all ages and walks of life.
