Crooked Saint - “Sweating Bullets”

Tim Wheatley has found a groove. With the release of his second EP in the space of six months, Crooked Saint’s “Sweating Bullets” keeps to the same sounds as the debut “Every Angry Inch”. Part country, part blues rock. Crooked Saint delivers four tracks that have a hint of Tim Rogers about it with tale-telling lyrics and snappy songwriting.
“Lazy Bones” opens with static AM radio before a rolling swampy blues riff takes over. The song is dirty and dusty and reminds me of empty U.S desert bar rooms. “Cast Of Yesterday” is similar to the tracks of the debut EP. A simple acoustic folk song. The title track shows of the talents of Tim’s songwriting and his bands musicianship and final track “Man In Waiting” is a country twang of a track complete with banjo and harmonicas and the great line ‘...I’m only half man/Without a drink in my hand’.
Essentially this is another solid recording for Crooked Saint. I’m really appreciating Tim’s ability to write cleaver lyrics and construct entertaining little tunes. The difference with EP number two is the inclusion of a full time band with The Demon Parades Michael Badger and guitarist Johnny Grant and drummer Troy Ramaekers. Having a full time band will add further cohesion to Tim’s songs and allow a fuller, rounding sound to the tracks.
